ABSTRACT
The maximal volume of sclerosant foam administered during a single session of sclerotherapy is regulated primarily by clinical guidelines, yet no randomized controlled trial has evaluated it as an independent variable. Consequently, existing thresholds are derived from expert opinion. A critical review of consensus documents and clinical practice guidelines on foam volume limits in sclerotherapy was conducted alongside the primary studies cited in those documents. As a result, recommended foam volume limits in consensus documents and clinical guidelines have ranged from 8 to 20 mL over two decades, with none of the thresholds supported by high-quality evidence. Therefore, prospective studies evaluating foam volume as a primary variable are needed.
